FOR A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW GENERATION
Nancy recognizes her clients’ unique needs, guiding them in a gentle and non-judgmental manner to develop their individual priorities, and establishing a plan. She applies the following core fundamentals to birthing parents, siblings, grandparents, and so on:
Support
Providing emotional and practical support to families bringing their baby home and easing the transition to parenthood. Including: making meals, helping with the adjustment period, how to best make the mother comfortable during the first days of coming home from the hospital, figuring out baby care (bathing, lactation suggestions, sleep recommendations, etc.) and referring other necessary providers to them.
Educate
Teaching everyone in the household about newborn care and developmental stages. Helping parents understand and read their baby’s cues. Breast/chest feeding guidance for lactation positioning and safe sleeping strategies.
Empower
Assuring parents that this transition is not easy. Everything is new to them, so with a little bit of practice and understanding of their baby’s needs, they will become experts.
Nancy’s journey began after completing an internship at Early Head Start in East Harlem in 2006, where she learned how many new mothers were not informed about the nutritional benefits of introducing their baby to solid foods at the appropriate developmental age. Her desire to help families in a more intimate way began when a friend was expecting their first child and asked Nancy for her expertise in baby products for her registry; as well as what it was like taking care of newborns. Nancy further advanced her knowledge of the needs of families caring for newborns and young children while working as a professional childcare provider for 10 years with a successful record in private homes. Nancy often traveled with families in and outside of the country to provide services that have brought them comfort while they were far away from home. For many years she focused on newborn care and enjoyed helping parents recognize their baby’s cues in order to understand what their baby needed at any given time.
Her previous employers have described her as “having the perfect demeanor for working with families… does not get stressed easily… is peaceful and happy… creates a calm and nurturing environment…. has the right priorities: safety, communication, nutrition, and education.”
Nancy’s training through CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association), and Birthing Advocacy Doula Training helped her dive into this world with the most evidence-based information for newborns and their families. She continues to educate herself and others with the most up-to-date information on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, best practices for newborn education and support, breastfeeding, and evidence-based sleep. Classes she has attended include Postpartum Support International, Unicorns & Seahorses: Supporting Trans Birthers, Infant Safe Sleep and The Center for Breastfeeding’s Lactation Counselor Training Course.
